Becoming a member
Library membership is completely free of charge for everyone in every library in the country.
You can join at any branch of Louth libraries (see here for list of branches) by presenting proof of your name and current address.
You can join at any age but children and young people under the age of 18 must get the permission of a parent or guardian to join the library. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, and for their children's selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the internet and online resources.
Register online
You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. You can then call into your local branch with your proof of name and address and photographic ID to receive your library card.
Conditions of membership
- Library cards can be used in any branch in Louth Library Service and any public library nationwide.
- Registering online will give you a temporary account which allows you to borrow 1 item and access a range of e-services.
- Online membership is for a limited time, visit your branch to verify your address and contact details and receive your library card.
- If you are under the age of 18, you must review these membership conditions with your parent or guardian before agreeing to make sure that you or your parent or guardian understand your and their legal obligations. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, their children’s selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the internet and online resources.
- Membership will allow you to use the library services as follows:
- Adult: access to all library collections, and internet services subject to the terms and conditions outlined.
- Child under 12: access to the children’s library, to DVDs up to a PG rating.
- Young Adult 12-14: access to the children’s and young adult library, to DVDs up to a 12 rating.
- Young Adult 15-17: can access all library collections, to DVDs up to 15 rating, and to internet services.
- When a child or young person is eligible to change borrower category from a Child membership to a Young Adult (12-14), or a Young Adult (12-14) to a Young Adult (15-17) membership, parents/guardians must accept the terms and conditions of membership on their behalf.
- Membership must be renewed annually.
- You may borrow up to twelve items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any library nationwide.
- All items may be borrowed for three weeks.
- Items may be renewed three times. Renew online or contact your local branch during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan a renewal is not permitted.
- You must all times observe the Louth Library Service Code of Conduct while using the library facilities and comply with the conditions of the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000. Public libraries operate within the statutory framework in relation to all services including the Code of Behaviour for the protection and safeguarding of children in public libraries 2014. Library users must comply with all associated requirements.
- DKIT/Louth Library Service Co-Operation: DKIT students with a current student card are entitled to join Louth Libraries for free. Louth Library Service members can also avail of the services of DKIT Library. Please ask at your local library.
